Amsterdam & Waterland Tour

Just east of Amsterdam lies Lake Markermeer and an area literally named “Waterland”. This great expanse of water still has a maritime feel to it although it was cut off from the North Sea in 1932. Popular with surfers, sailors and bird watchers, the lake takes the centre stage in our popular cycling holiday which starts and finishes in Amsterdam. Cycling all the way around the lake, you will find yourself captivated by charming historical towns, informative museums of cultural history and ever-changing land- and waterscapes. Visit quaint fishing village Volendam where old ladies still wear traditional clothing; and let the unique landscape of “Waterland” blow you away.

DAY TO DAY SCHEDULE

Day 1: Arrive in Huizen

Day 2: Huizen – Amsterdam

31 km

Today is your last cycling day in The Netherlands. After breakfast you start your cycling holiday on winding dikes along the edge of the former Zuiderzee, you have a unique view of the beautiful polder landscape and water. You pass the Muidercastle (also known as “Amsterdam Castle”). A visit to this medieval castle is well worth it. Today’s ride is short. So you have enough time to enjoy the Dutch capital.

Day 3: Amsterdam – Volendam

43 km

Today you will cycle through the villages Volendam and Monnickendam along Lake Markermeer. The beautiful old Dutch stone houses in the distinctive heart of the catholic fishing village Volendam seem to have been drawn up without an organised street plan. “De Dijk”, overlooking the harbour, attracts many tourists who browse the souvenir shops and have a break at a pavement cafe or restaurant. Enjoy the authentic atmosphere and the view of the harbor and the water.

Day 4: Volendam – Enkhuizen

32 km

Today there are a number of typical Dutch towns for you on the program. After a nice breakfast in your hotel in Volendam you cycle to Hoorn. The town is uniquely situated in a bay of the IJsselmeer. For that reason alone Hoorn is worth a visit. The center, with unique seventeenth-century houses, hundreds of historical monuments and beautifully preserved streets, take you back to seventeenth century Holland.
Via Hoorn you will cycle along the coast of the Hoornse Hop and the Markermeer. The polder landscape with various Dutch windmills, unique farmhouses and vast fields, fascinates from minute to minute.
At the end of the afternoon you reach Enkhuizen, according to many, one of most beautiful Dutch cities. The city is beautifully located on the IJsselmeer and is crossed by numerous canals. With its seventeenth-century city wall and unique fifteenth century churches, the city is a paradise for history lovers. A stroll through the historic is definitely recommended. In the evening you relax in your comfortable hotel.

Day 5: Enkhuizen – Lelystad

38 km

Space and an endless expanse of water. That is what awaits you today.
After a delicious breakfast at your hotel, you will cycle via a thirty-kilometer long dike to Lelystad. This is a unique experience because you will literally cycle across the IJsselmeer. Literally! With on your right and your left Markermeer and lake IJsselmeer the world seems to exist out of nothing but water.
In the afternoon you reach Lelystad. The city is surrounded by forests, parks and flat farmland. Lelystad offers something for everyone. In the center, let yourself be carried away with the bustling city life while you enjoy yourself on a terrace with a snack or drink. Want to learn more about the largest polder in the Netherlands and the battle against water? Spend a visit to Poldermuseum Nieuwland. And shoppers beware! Batavia city has a gigantic mall where you can shop till you drop.

Day 6: Lelystad – Huizen

33 km

Lelystad is replaced by a unique landscape: the Oostvaardersplassen. The reed plains, rugged grasslands, wildlife and lakes of this vast marshlands are unique in Europe. The lakes are a popular area for many bird species, including the bald eagle. Oostvaardersplassen take you to Almere, the youngest city in the Netherlands. Your day ends in Huizen.
