Cologne – Rotterdam – Rhine Tour

What could be better than discovering the Rhine Valley by bike? This bike tour can start either in Cologne or in Rotterdam, depending on your own choice. Cologne, where the imposing cathedral certainly will be remembered, but also the many Romanesque churches, art museums and the chocolate museum.The route leads through the impressive industrial area (Ruhrgebiet) with its many ports and steel mills. From the Dutch border you’ll cycle on dykes and embankments while enjoying the vast landscape and the characteristic rivers like the Rhine, Waal, Lek and Nieuwe Maas. The towns and villages on the rivers have their own characteristic features and are especially lively and cozy. Very special is the journey through the Betuwe with the slow flowing river Linge as your companion. With the beautiful blossom (in the spring) and the associated large-scale horticulture. This tour will make you experience The Netherlands and Germany like you’ve never experienced before!


Day 1: Arrival Cologne (you can also choose Rotterdam)

Cologne is one of the most important cultural cities in Europe. Next to the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, the Cologne Cathedral, you will see many impressive buildings from the Roman era and the Middle Ages. Today Cologne is a media city with many museums and numerous top events. This brings with it a vibrant city full of entertainment for tourists and restaurants.

Day 2: Cologne - Dusseldorf

60 km

The first day of cycling, through Europe's largest industrial area; the Ruhrgebiet. Ports and steel plants dominate the landscape. When you're in Dusseldorf make sure you have enough time to visit one of the many museums or stroll along the Königsallee shopping street with its impressive buildings.

Day 3: Düsseldorf - Rheinberg

Today you will pass through the center of the German coal industry, the city of Duisburg, situated at the mouth of the Ruhr river. Duisburg is the main center of the Central European steel industry. Nature lovers will enjoy the scenery along the Rhine today, the rolling countryside with lakes is a paradise for birds and other animals. Inside the impressive city walls of Rheinberg you fall asleep satisfied.

Day 4: Rheinberg - Emmerich

65 km

Idyllic nature in the foothills of the Rhine dominate this cycling day. Plan a stop at the highlight of today, the Willibrordi Cathedral in Wesel and the St. Viktor Dom Xanten. You stay overnight in Emmerich where you can admire the "Golden Gate Bridge" of the Lower Rhine, the longest suspension bridge in Germany.

Day 5: Emmerich - Nijmegen

40 km

After a few kilometers cycling you arrive at the Dutch border, where the Rhine splits into the Waal and the Lower Rhine. Follow the wide corridors of the Waal to the old Hanseatic city of Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands with its rich history still very evident.

Day 6: Nijmegen - Tiel

40 km

Today the river Waal is your guide through one of the most fertile regions in Europe: the Betuwe. Fruits and vegetables dominate the landscape which is especially known for its apples, pears, raspberries and cherries. Your day ends in the picturesque village of Tiel, the capital of the Betuwe.

Day 7: Tiel - Gorinchem

50 km

Through the beautiful medieval town of Buren, with numerous houses from the 17th and 18th centuries you cross the river Waal at the town Zaltbommel. Plan a short visit today to the picturesque moated castle Loevestein on the Maas estuary. This bicycle day ends with the ferry from the fortified town of Woudrichem to Gorinchem where you will stay overnight.

Day 8: Gorinchem - Dordrecht

50 km

After the morning bike ride through the historic town of Gorinchem you follow the bike path near the river the Waal by the Rhine delta. The highlight of today is the ride through the largely untouched nature reserve De Biesbosch. The new shore connection will take you to Dordrecht, the old fortified town just outside Rotterdam with 1,000 monuments and its beautiful historic harbor area.

Day 9: Dordrecht - Rotterdam

40 km

A visit to the UNESCO World Heritage “Kinderdijk” should not be missed in this watery journey. 19 polder windmills make it a real highlight. At the end of the day you will cycle along the Nieuwe Maas and the famous Erasmus Bridge, to the center of Rotterdam which has plenty of restaurants and entertainment possibilities.

Day 10: Rotterdam
